[The following data were published in "The Archer Quarterly" publication of The Archer Association, PO Box 6233, McLean, VA 22106, edited by George W. Archer, (Simon, Stephen, Stephen, Nathan, James I). The Archer Quarterly was published from the Fall of 1982 to the Summer of 1992. It is no longer published.

The editor's father, Simon Archer, was born in Sandyville, Jackson Co., WV 24 Aug 1884, son of Stephen Archer (Stephen, Nathan, James, Patrick) and Helen Josephine Butcher.

The material below was taken from disk files used to publish "The Archer Quarterly." The comments in parenthesis ( ), such as Editor's note, were in the original publication. The material in square brackets [GWA comment:] was added in June 2000 to update or clarify this material drawing on files I have developed since 1974 based on material submitted by Patrick's descendants, published and archival sources. Time did not permit recopying all the data from hard copy. Instead this material is submitted in hopes that Patrick's descendants will share information to supplement and correct what has been published here to support my on-going project to published "The Descendants of Patrick Archer." This is a multi-generational genealogy beginning with Patrick and following his descendants down to the present generation. Presently I have material on eleven generations. If you want more on anything you find her or on any descendant, including non-Archers,
contact:
George Archer,
c/o The Archer Association,
PO Box 6233,
McLean, VA 22106

or email me with your mailing address and a general outline of your descent from Patrick at:
garcher@wdn.com.

General warning: All of my comments below are based on a 25-year accumulation of ARCHER surname data with an emphasis on the Patrick descendants of which I am one. Data is never complete. Conclusions based on incomplete data are never definitive; there is always room for error of interpretation and of fact (clerical errors, lies, poor memory).

Verify the data and conclusions below with your own research, using original, not published sources. Treat even primary sources with scepticism. Try to get three pieces of evidence for each fact you are trying to prove and compare them to ensure they are not all drawing on the same (flawed) sources. Good luck with your research. Sometimes that's what is needed.
George W. Archer,
former editor, "The Archer Quarterly."

George Enos, her husband, Wesley M. Oliver and Eliza M. Oliver, wife of Wesley Oliver, conveyed for $1 to Minerva Oliver and Eliza Oliver quit claim unto Minerva and Eliza for land in Richland Twp, Guernsey Co., OH. Land described as: part of NW 1/4 of S. 12, T. 8, R. 9, being NE 1/4 of NW 1/4 S. 12, T. 8, R. 9, containing 40 A. also part of NW part of NW 1/4 S. 12, T. 8, R. 9, containing 1/2 A. Signing and witnesses were in Noble Co., OH. Widow dower interviews by B.F. Penn on 25 Jun 1891 and Van B. Craig on 1 Aug 1891.

[GWA comment: I cannot identify this Simon and Melissa, and there is no Simon (of Simon) anywhere in Noble Co., OH or other adjacent county records to identify this couple. The other names are all Noble Co., OH people including Benjamin F. Penn who was a Notary in Stock Twp, Noble Co. The people named "Enos" used an alternative spelling for Enoch/Enochs/Enix, etc. I don't see any connection between Margaret and George Enos or Minerva and Eliza Oliver with the Archers. It seems to have been a direct land transaction and not a passage of property among relations. The same Oliver's appear in a separate transaction in Bk 115, pp. 297-299. The only Melissa married to an Archer I can find is Weeden who also is present in Guersney Co. and died 20 Dec 1918 and is buried in Northwood Cemetery, Cambridge, OH.]

Jeremiah Bond and Sarah J., wife, and J.N. Bond and Dora, wife, to James M. Archer, Eliza Montgomery, Sarah E. Montgomery, dated 2 Apr 1903, $4500, in Londonderry Twp, Guernsey Co., NW 1/4 S. 12, T. 10, R. 7, Steubensville lands, 152 A. excepting small graveyard in the S.E. corner thereof. Ownership interest divided: James 1/2, Eliza and Sarah having 1/4 each. Signed: Jeremiah Bond, Sarah J. Bond, J.N. Bond, Dora Bond. Witnesses: Isaac Hyde, J.S. LePage.

[GWA comment: The same property changes hands again in 1904. See Bk 82, p. 383. James' conections to the Bonds and Montgomery's if any would help identify the ancestry of James. If the private cemetery still exists, this is a roadmap to it. It would be located within sight of State Route 962, just 2.5 miles southwest of Fairview in Oxford Twp. The legal land description puts it in Oxford, not Londonderry Twp. If this is a clerical error, the cemetery would be in S. 12, T. 11, R. 7 and would be visible just west of State Route 98 in T. 11.]

Bk 78, p. 371

Lewis Whorton of Cambridge to J.C. Archer, dated 11 Apr 1904, $1000, lot no. 7 in Siegfrieds First Addition to Cambridge, which was bought by Whorton by back taxes with an outstanding loan for $400 to be assumed by Archer. Signed: Lewis Whorton. Witnessess: Joseph B. Ferguson, George Moore.

Archer, dated 8 Oct 1904, $1116, Willson Twp, Guernsey Co., parcel part of SW 1/4 S. 1, T. 1, R. 2 in U.S. Military District (described- features, limits, adjacent land owners, how McCulloch acquired by inheritance). Signed: Imma F. McCulloch. Witnesses: A.R. McCulloch, Minnie McCulloch.

[GWA comment: This could be my typo or misinterpretation for I.F. Archer (below), Bk 84, p. 311 who was in business with C.M. Simons as Simons &Archer.]

Bk 82, p. 383

Deed of Conveyance - Sheriff to T.L. Dunlevey

Deed dated 16 Feb 1905. On 4 Nov 1904 Sarah E. Montgomery filed petition for partition of property to sell land vs. James M. Archer, et al. Oct Term court ordered a Sheriff's sale. Sold on 28 Jan 1905 to T.L. Dunlevy for $3700. Land located in Londonderry Twp, Guernsey Co. NW 1/4 S. 12, T. 10, R. 7, Steubensville lands, 152 A. excepting small graveyard in the S.E. corner. Witnessess: W.A. Carfreiter(?), Clara Lynn.

[GWA comment: The same property as cited in Bk. 73, p. 490. Because this is a partition deed, it implies that Archer, Montgomery's and Bond's have a family connection. The legal land description puts it in Oxford, not Londonderry Twp.]

Bk 83, p. 27

Thomas B. Towner and Jula M., wife, to Weedon Archer, dated 21 Mar 1905, $1000, 1 A. 80 poles in Cambridge Twp, (described) beginning in center of road opposite center of road leading from National Road to the town of Senecaville, thence W. along the center of the National Road, 13 rods, thence S. 18 1/2, thence E. 13 rods to the center of Senecaville Road and thence N. along center of the road 18 1/2 rods to place of beginning. Signed: Thomas B. Towner and Julia M. Towner. Witnessess: Robert T. Scott, A.R. McCullock.

[GWA comment: Weeden (James, Joseph, James, Patrick). Weedon md. Melissa Smith 14 Oct 1868 in Noble Co., OH, moved to Jackson Co, WV by 1872 and remained there until at least 1904 as he was elected Justice of the Peace for Grant Dist from 1901 to 1904. He moved to Cambridge by 1905 and died there being buried in Northwood Cemetery, Cambridge, OH.

This kind of cross-river migration between Ohio and West Virginia was typical for a large number of Archers beginning about 1872. Cheap land in WV and Kansas attracted them. Better jobs drew them to the larger urban centers of Cambridge, OH and Parkersburg, WV. So research on this family should cover both sides of the Ohio from Wheeling, WV south to Athens, OH.]

[GWA comment: Patrick Archer (Simon, Michael, James, Patrick) and Clemtine Rossiter. Their 6 Sep 1875 marriage in Noble Co., OH lists her as Clementine Archer, but Martin Archer in his "Genealogical History...", p. 47, lists her as Clem Rossiter. Her maiden name is verified by an obituary of their daughter Rosa. The couple sold out in Guernsey Co., OH, went to Center Twp, Noble Co., OH and then left for Clifton, Washington Co., KS where they lived until their deaths.]
