Enlisted as Joe Wornoski, US Army during World War I. He was a Corporal in Company A of the 166th Infantry seeing action in St. Mihiel, Argonne, Verdun, Lorraine and Bacarat. Prior to WWI, he was in the old Company A of the 4th Infantry at the Mexican border during the Villa disturbances and was then transferred to the Famous Rainbow Division. He was a charter member of the American Legion Post 91, Veteran of Foreign Wars, The Rainbow Division Association and the Eagles
Have Headline newspaper article about his death caused by a hit to the head while trying to break up a fight outside of a cafe. Joe went into a coma and died at 5:15am on 6 Sep 1946 at Berea Community Hospital of a Cerebral hemorrhage.
He was a long time tavern owner, "BIG JOE'S TAVERN" which is now Polish Village Tavern located at the corner of Berea and Pulaski streets in Berea, Ohio.
