NOTE 1
My notes on Julius: Born in the Rhine area of
Germany, Oberstein-en-der-Naha (Mosel) which I presume is a town in the Mosel
River Valley.
As the family story goes, the Oberstein area was known for beaded bags and
costume jewelry.
Julius was a farmer before going to the US (in 1882 you guys say). The
town he first settled in was Brook Park, Ohio (Bordered by Berea,
Ohio)
NOTE 2
My Great Grandmother Ada died in her sleep the same day
that she heard about Uncle Harvey being killed by they train. The story
was that it was very early in the morning before sun-up to go hunting (I see
that your article mentions a trap shooting match) and it was cold so there was a
ground layer of mist/fog and the RR crossing did not have a drop gate and they
went through and the train nailed them.
NOTE 3
William's wife Gladys Beckwith was the
first member of the Cleveland Athletic Club. They had 5 children - two
were twins that died at birth. The three boys all went to Dartmouth -
except that #3 (Russell) only went for 30 days before enlisting in the army.
He apparently beat Sam Snead at golf one day. In the Army he was with
Patton for 122 days at the front lines - and survived the Battle of the Bulge -
only one of three from his squad that survived.
Larry. A little info on Oberstein full name is Idar-Oberstein is situated on the
outflow of the Idar River into the Nahe River. The Nahe river is separate from
the Mosel and joins the Rhine at Bingen. Idar-Oberstein is about 45 Km east
south east from Trier and is separated by a hilly region.
Note from David A. Spang:
Ober (over) Stein
(semiprecious stones) supports your stories about the old industry there. I have
visited the area and it is currently known as the prime diamond cutting area of
Europe. I would suggest that the family at one time originated from the village
of
Spang just north of Trier.
Spang, Germany (49° 59' N, 6° 41' E) Landkreis Bitburg-Prüm, Rheinland-Pfalz.
A village located 26 kilometers north of Trier, now part of Spangdahlem, and the location of a large US Air Force base.
Its population in 2002 was 840.
Spangdahlem belongs to Speicher, in the area of Bitburg-Prüm in the Eifel mountains. On June 30, 2007 it had a total
population of 812 permanent inhabitants of which 405 were female. In the first half of 2007, 5 baby's were born, 7 people passed away, 24 moved to and
12 moved away from Spangdahlem.
On Google maps, the town is only listed as "Dahlem". So,
it's simple to surmise that the original villages of Spang and Dahlem have
been combined ... although I noticed that there is a SpangerStrausse road, if
you look slightly to the west of town:
