At that time there were no railroads in this end of the state nearer than Bulls Gap, so he set out on foot. Having but little money, he worked at several places as he went along. He finally arrived at Memphis. The last 40 miles to where his sister lived was almost like a jungle and he walked this distance. In a short while the war began and he, being a Union sympathizer, had to leave that rebel country in a hurry. He was captured and accused of being a Union spy. A scout of General Grant was in camp and heard of my fathers case. He had fathers name listed as one of the prisoner to be exchanged. From then on he was in the Union Army. He had four years of service through the mid western states, serving in three different regiments. (2) Maria Sherfy born 12 March 1768 died 7 January 1858 buried in New Salem, Illinois married Nicholas Onstatt born 25 December 1763 died 1829 married on 10 January 1787 NOTE: After Maria Sherfy married Nicholas Onstott, they lived in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania where George, father of Nicholas, owned some land. George and family had moved to Washington County about 1782 but it seems Nicholas remained in Cumberland County until after he married and then also went to Washington County where his father owned land. Nicholas served in the Pennsylvania Militia from 1790 -- 1800, so at least his first seven children were born in Pennsylvania. They owned land in LaRue County, Kentucky near Hodginsville, so they probably moved there from Pennsylvania. Nicholas died and was buried here in 1829. About this time there seemed to be an exodus of the Onstott family to Illinois. However, George went to Nebraska and John went to Arkansas. David and Levi went to Missouri. William was the only son to remain in Kentucky. Katherine, Abraham, Henry, Elizabeth and Mary went to Illinois and eventually all got to Dewitt County. Children:
