He enlisted in the 13th TN Cav 5 Aug 1863 and deserted 25 Aug 1864. He was apprehended by Confederate troops in Carter Co., TN., given summary justice in a military tribunal and shot. His body was found shortly after his death by his wife, Nancy Ann Markland. She applied but was rejected for a widow's pension because William was a deserter when shot. One published account of his killing identify him as Henry Archer, but this may be in error, as oral family traditions are more pervasive that he was William Smith Archer. He had a brother John b. c. 1838 - c. 1836, married Sarah Pierce, who may have had Henry as a middle name, leading to the confusion in the published account. There is no record of a pension for John.]
