Stephen Solomon Archer had three wives: 1. Solomon Archer md Ruth Ellen Berry b. 1836 on 11 Jan 1855 in Noble Co., OH. On 12 Apr 1858 the Noble Co., court granted her a divorce for abandonment by Solomon. 2. Solomon Archer md. Sarah E. Law 20 May 1855, Guernsey Co, OH; 3. Stephen S. Archer md. Hannah Davis b. c. 1838, Syracuse, NY on 11 Feb 1857 location not given by Stephen in his published biography. If the dates don't add up, its because he was a bigamist at least up to 1862 with the marriage of his second wife, making her a bigamist also. After the marriage, Stephen and Sarah may have gone off together to Cloud Co., KS, but this is not clear from the record. What is documented is that on 14 Jun 1862 Sarah remarried to Dr. S.M. Ransopher, a Cloud Co., KS M.D. The local biographical history on Dr. Ransopher published after his death in 1890 described Sarah Law and her first marriage with the unusual statement that she was the "widow of Solomon Archer who was supposed to have died in the army." The wording was such that the author may have had some doubts. What really happened may never be uncovered but Stephen Solomon Archer was not dead. A year before the Civil War began, Stephen and Hanna Davis appeared on a deed recorded in Feb 1859 as husband and wife selling land in Franklin Co., KS, and a local history published in 1902 with information provided by Stephen said they were married 11 Feb 1857 and that Stephen left Ohio for Kansas in the Fall of 1856 and arrived in Franklin Co., KS in Feb 1857. I have never been able to find any marriage record in Kansas or elsewhere for Stephen and Hannah. Stephen's autobiographic sketch described his parents accurately as James Archer and Catherine Headley leaving no doubt as to his identity. He was known as "Solomon" in Noble Co., but the biographical description of him is "Stephen S. Archer." He claims to have enlisted in 1862 and served at least up to 1864 when he was a member of Co. H., Kansas Volunteer Infantry Regiment. Stephen had finally settled down and remained in Franklin Co. for over 35 years and raised a large family and then he and Hanna moved on to Ellsworth Co., KS by 1900 and probably died there by 1904 when Hanna applied for a widow's pension. The pension file should close a gap in this record for the period 1860-1865 while Stephen was serving in the Civil War. I would be most interested hearing from descendants on Stephen's history so I can verify if the paper trail I have constructed of his marital affairs is accurate.] |
