JACKSON CO. WV DEED INDEX 1875-1939
(Partial Listing)
(Editor's comments: These Grantor/Grantee Index entries from the Jackson Co., WV Deed Indexes were transcribed from tape recordings
made from LDS microfilms of the originals located at the Jackson Co., WV Court House. They are incomplete readings of some of the
Archers in the Deed Index, the listings after 1900 not being as complete as before 1900. Also omitted from these readings are many
land transactions by Archer women who were not joined by husbands or others. Some volume and page numbers were omitted from the tape
due to oversight. However, it should be possible to interpolate volume numbers from adjacent entries.
Do not assume that the absence of a deed record means that someone did not own land. Often deeds were not recorded at the Court
House, rather, the deed was kept in a strongbox at home. The chain of ownership may only appear as a reference to previous ownership
might be found many years later in the land records of later owners. When deeds were not recorded, the totals of acreage of
land bought and sold by one person may not be equal.
We would very much like to have publish of all of the Archer transactions below; however, this incomplete transcription of the
Deed Index may assist you to locate the records you seek.
The Archers listed below came from Noble Co., OH in 1872, arriving in family groups which included the collateral (in-law) surnames
of ALEXANDER, DAVIS, DOWLER, GRANDON, HUPP, McBRIDE, McKEE, MOORE, WEEKLEY, and WELLS, to name but a few. To the best of my knowledge, the
only Archer line in this county for the period 1872 to 1920 came from
Noble Co., OH, described in detail in the article serialized in The Archer
Quarterly as "Patrick Archer and His Descendants." William
Leeper Archer (Michael, Joseph, James I, Patrick) (b. 29 April 1841, Noble Co., OH.;
d. 29 Oct 1917, Jackson Co., WV.) seems to be the first Archer family to have
bought land in Jackson Co., WV in 1872, although there could have been
some earlier settlement. By 1930, however, the Archer surname had all but disappeared from Jackson Co. due to migrations brought on by falling
farm prices, depleted soil and better employment opportunities in the
factories in the Parkersburg area of Wood Co. just north of Jackson Co.

Deed. Henry Archer and wife, Hulda, 1 May 1878 to Stephen Harris of Noble Co. OH. In the deed Henry gives
some background of this transaction: In 1860 in Noble Co. Stephen Harris and his wife, Mary, sold to Henry
Archer a farm in Enoch Twp. in Noble Co., of 80A for $3000 with an agreement to re-sell to Stephen. Henry
purchased and sold a farm of Thomas Brown's in Wood Co., WV and purchased another farm in Nesselroad Fork, Grant
Twp, Jackson Co., WV which he wishes to convey to Stephen Harris in this transaction. He mentions that Stephen
Harris' wife, Mary, is dead. Henry and Hulda deeded the property for Stephen lifetime, for his maintenance with
Henry and Hulda retaining ultimate control of the property. |

Melissa (Sweeney) Grandon. Mary Ann md. Benjamin Finley Archer (Joseph,
Michael, Joseph, James I, Patrick). This was the first property
acquisition in Jackson Co. by Benjamin Finley and his wife whom he married 5 Oct 1878
in Jackson Co.
The Grandons had a custom of bankrolling their daughters to pay for
their first land purchase as a married woman. The grants came too long after
the marriages to be a dowery. Mary Ann had been married 15 years when this
first purchase took place from her parents. She and Benjamin had made no
other purchase up to this time. The pattern here was set earlier by Enoch
Grandon, father of William, who probably provided the money for William's
sister, Nancy Grandon, to buy property in her own name although she had married
to Stephen Archer (Nathan, James I, Patrick) for 30 years. They married in
Monroe Co., OH 27 Nov 1844 and owned no recorded land until Nancy made
the first and only purchase in Jackson Co. (Jackson Co., WV, Deeds Vol 9, p. 392
-R.S. Brown and wife, Anna H. to
Nancy Archer, 1 May 1874).]

Deed, dated Aug 1878 R.S. Brown and all, including Nathan Archer, Sarah M. Young, wife of James T. Young, both of
Jackson C. Brown said that he and his wife on 1 June 1873 conveyed to Nathan Archer a tract of 100A on Isaac's Run
of Nesselroad Fork of Sandy by unrecorded deed of that date, and Archer says that the deed was burned up in his
house, which was also burned on the same land, and Archer and wife gave to B.(?) O.(?) Williams, trustee for land
for said Brown, a deed of trust to secure the payment of the purchase money. This deed was dated 1 Jan 1873.
Archer failed to pay the trust deed and wants to receive the purchase contract which is hereby rescinded. Brown
says that he is going to foreclose on a deed for 160A to pay debt owed to him by Sarah Young and James T. Young.
Nathan's land was then deeded to the Youngs. Nathan was forgiven the debt (by the Youngs?).

[GWA comment: Nelson Archer (Morgan, James, Joseph, James I, Patrick)

some other transactions including Nelson with with Nelson and Jacob and probable wife Elizabeth Sadler who would have Rebecca's parents. The
transactions with his in-laws took place before Jacob and Elizbeth left Jackson Co., WV for Norton Co., KS and seem to have been the property
he bought in 1877 selling if off by 1878 singly and jointly with his
wife's parents, possibly to raise money for their settlement in Norton Co., KS
where they went from Jackson Co, KS. Jacob would have been about 64 and Elizabeth, 50 when they left, and it seems reasonable that Nelson and
wife may may have gone to Kansas with them between the period 1878 and Aug
1882 when his first born daughter, Martha, was born in Jackson Co. but
research in Norton Co., KS and adjacent Kansas counties has not produced any
records on him.] |
