ARCHERS IN THE U.S. CENSUS (Reprinted from The Archer Quarterly, 1982-1986) Edited by George W. Archer, PO Box 6233, McLean, VA 22106 ARCHERS AND SOME VARIANT SPELLINGS OF ARCHER IN THE U.S. CENSUS 1800 EDITOR'S COMMENTS: In compiling these extracts of of ARCHERS from the U.S. Census of 1800, I have had to compromise between completeness, accuracy and the incredible time it takes to do the job. The extracts were taken from National Archives U.S. Census microfilm, however, the names were located in the Census using many different census indexes, sometimes using more than one census to cross check the accuracy of those who compiled the indexes. I did not make an every-page search of each name on each roll of microfilm. Therefore, it is probable that there are errors and omissions in this list. Nor have all of the possible surname variations been searched because at the time I made the extraction, not all of the census indexes were available to search for ARCHER name variations in every state. In some entries I have provided the data from Accelerated Indexing printouts because the data did not appear on the film where AIS said it should appear. This data was not searched for and confirmed in a page-by-page search of the county census. It is probable that this person is in the census, but the page number is not known. As for some conclusions you may or may not be able to draw from the U.S. Census, do not assume that if the ARCHER you seek is not listed in this or future extracted census listings that he or she was not living in the county at the time. I have seen many instances of the family being away the day the census taker came, census takers who lost track of where they quit the preceding day and omitted some households, families that were migrating between states at the time of the census (and were sometimes double counted by the census takers). The information itself can be suspect because of errors by the census taker or because he was given information by neighbors or by those living in the house when the person being counted was not at home. I can recall householders who could not recall consistently from census to census where they were born so that their birthplace alternated between two or three states.
